The Badminton Asia Championships are underway in Manila. In mixed doubles, Tokyo Olympics gold medalists Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping defeated bronze medalists Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino and will face Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong in an all-Chinese final.
China's World No. 4 pair defeated the Japanese duo in the Tokyo Summer Olympics semifinals, but lost to them in the UK Championship this year. A powerful smash from 27-year-old Zhejiang native Wang gave them a 6-4 lead, before they extended their advantage to 9-7 in the first game. The Chinese pair went on to dominate it 21-12 but the second game was much closer. Huang hit wide and Watanabe and Higashino trailed 20-19. Wang and Huang hung on to edge the second game 24-22 to book a spot in the final.
In the other semifinal, China's World No. 2 pair of Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong defeated Praveen Jordan and Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia to advance to the final. Zheng and Huang took the first game 21-8, after which Jordan said she cannot continue. Zheng and Huang will meet their compatriots Wang and Huang in the final.
