50% of imported fish contain arsenic-PHI

The Public Health Inspectors Union says more than 50% of imported fish, contains arsenic.

Chairman Upul Rohana said a stringent mechanism is not in place to test food items for heavy metal at local laboratories.

Rohana citing this as a concern, said specialists have also raised issue over the matter.

Meanwhile Rohana stated that PHI are currently obtaining samples of coconut oil to be directed to the Government Analyst and other recognised laboratories for testing.

He said Government Analyst is not in possession with necessary equipment, adding that only a few samples can be tested at a time.
