Release time:2021-04-05 Publisher:South Asia Development

Minister of Education GL Peiris says the public must have some understanding of the allegations levelled against Sri Lanka by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Speaking to media in Kandy the Minister said foreign councils will not be allowed to make decisions regarding the future of the country.

He noted the country must face the allegations.

The Minister questioned whether the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner and the UNHRC should be allowed to control internal affairs of the country, including the formulation of laws, amendments to the Constitution and appointments to the Tri-Forces and state service, and questioned the purpose of Parliament.

Minister Peiris said according to the recently passed resolution, the UNHRC believes human rights violations will take place in future, and a vicious scheme is underway to hunt Tri-Forces and take them before international courts by spending USD 2.8 million.

Minister GL Peiris noted all factions must unite regardless of party differences, in order to put an end to foreign countries fulfilling their agendas by using Sri Lanka.

He claimed the UNHRC was directing attention towards Sri Lanka in order to fulfil its agenda.

Minister Peiris said leaders of certain countries have openly sought support from the diaspora for elections.

He stressed if no political party raises its voice against such measures, it is a form of betrayal against the country.
